Best Laughter in Town

Currently scientists are taking very seriously the study of laughter and humour. No this is not a joke. They are starting to make research and evidence linking factors of the brain to body chemical gas ( there are many types of gas in the body not only…never mind) with this phenomenon called laughter. Ok why are we talking about this? Because I owed much to the laughter and humour in Honiara as an individual. I am not saying we are the most happiest people on earth, but our humour and laughter are important antidotes to most of our hard realities ( and I really want to reflect this very much in this blog as well). Don’t get me wrong there are moments of heated disagreements that totally displaces humour in our society. But this can always be replayed in some instances with humor injected into the disagreeing moments as a substitute for resolving hurtful situation for  people who find it awkward to openly display any hard felt deep emotions, opinion or affection to random groups of people. It is okay with close families and friends but not erradic in public as this is improper and deviance. Someone who can take up laughter and humour in hard times not during, is very much admired in this society. Times are changing though and not everybody is holding on to this essential skill. A form of art practiced less, probably. This is more visible in Honiara, the only place where most of the diverse cultural groups in the country exist together in a single geographical location.

It goes to lesson that while there are many remedies(new age, technology, fashion, etc)  offered for modern life difficulties and perceived obstacles, simple solutions that gave one calm,  peace and contentment requires no expenive or complex solution. Often the simple things in life make far greater impact. Like laughter and Humour. Cliche. Maybe. But true. Just checking to see if you are checking your selves. or myself too.

Monday

It is that day again! Monday! The weekend is over and Monday is here for everybody to adjust again to the long week ahead. Its not that bad, except  in Honiara we all just need some inspiration and of course something funny to get us going. Today morning was raining and unusually gloomy in Honiara. The first thing on my mind is how am I going to get to the bus stop without an umbrella then I saw an elderly walking passed soaking wet and that don’t help either. So after some hot sweet tea, bread and butter ( classic Honiara breakfast!) I followed the morning crowd to catch the public bus half wet, although there are attempts by others to shield of the drizzling rain with banana leaf ( you dont see that often anywhere in the world) and some piece of cardboard sheet, most went to work and school half wet ( half dry?) today.  Therefore to lift some spirits today I went searching like mad for inspirations on the internet. While the internet is not the answer for everything in life it is the fastest way to get it, like panadol ya. I got some high listening to a local reggae band on the way to work in the bus though, its the first time  I heard them, I think its One House ( I promise to find out more about them and provide link) if anybody know about them can you just email me so that I can contact them. You know Support Local Music!

Anyways  one of the way l look for Inspirations and  other things to make the week more interesting is that  I look for small snippets, pictures or music to pull me up and face another week this is done through thehe internet of course but there are other ways to do it as well as mentioned, so here goes: ( note: most blogs featured  overseas oriented  things but some of them touch universal things…human things)

If you are currently reading this blog with some time on your hands and want to find inspirational quotations here is one of my favorite found on Positivity blog:

“My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.”
Ernest Hemingway

The above quote kept me writing and blogging. Great quote from a great novelist.

What about this-

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.
Carl Jung

Nice huh? But nothing beats good old Honiara side road comments for funny. Like today this guy was wet and ran toward the bus stop with everybody huddled together already wet and crowded, he ran in stood and smiled and in typical Honiara way said …at least the rain is no excuse for morning face wash…hehehe..ok I dont think this joke went down well with the English language but you true Honiara ones out there will know what I mean. So check out the above blog for more inspiring qoute. Hope that blog dont mind me mentioning it like this. So get cracking …hey put on some Bob Marley… Don’t worry about a thing..every little thing is gonna be alright..yep Three Little Birds… Light Up the Darkness…

oh! I just cant sign off before giving you this other interesting link…check out Juan Francisco Casas.. this talented guy drew all his work on Blue Biro man ae…creativity and positivity…hehe

See u all later …

The Weekend is Here! 6 most Weekend things to do in Honiara.

Okay, the weekend is not really something to get excited about in Honiara, except sleep in and bad hangovers. Apart from those it is usually a busy time for families ( talking about extended families here not nucluer) to get those pending chores, tasks and shopping done. Not to forget getting some quality times on beaches or just simply lazing in the house. This is of course all done in Honiara style becuase it is the most Weekend things to do in Honiara in 6 most Weekend things to do in Honiara.

6.Beer Drinking Sessions. Night Clubs and DUI

4:30 pm on friday is when the unofficial weekend in Honiara starts. The mood kicks in instantly, and if one is infectious  with the idea of some beers and bars, and whatever else that may come after midnight, then he or she is part of the current night life social crowd heading to corner bottleshops, blackmarkets, resturants, bars, nightclubs and hotels ( some prefer mobility by hiring taxis with loud musics) searching for toxication and escapism. This is becoming a fast and popular way for Honiara social and weekend night scences, although there is not much of night clubbing here pointing in the hip and glomour scene, it is the fun that matters for the weekend in this crowd. Over here we  called it 6 to 6…can you keep up?

Tip: For those who have been quite out of touch or pocket reach for the past months the current top 5 Nightclubs and bars for weekend in Honiara are 5) Moon Light Club- Recently Opened, Live bands, check for parking space though 4) Top 10 Night Club- Big crowded and attracting young just-clubbing crowds 3) Airport Motel Bula Bar- great music, outside of town but cautious on transport going up and returning 2) Flamingo Bar, Honira Hotel- Not really a night club but clean and classy as Honiara can get! 1) Aloha Night Club- latest and currently happening

5. Picnics on West Honiara Beaches

Picnics are big events for Honiara families and I’m not talking Picnic baskets and mats like those picturesque family laughing together on a mat popular in Western magazines, usually big groups of family, relatives and friends get together to organise such events. There are the pots of cooked food ( especially rice) BBQ plates, firewood, half of the house kitchen utensils, towels and mats packed usually on open back of trucks and then speed off out off Honiara to the sea until late evening, when exhausting mass of people and vehilce journey back into Honiara for another week.

4. Long rides along roads and making unexpected visits to houses of firends and families

This is almost cultural. Unexpected visitors and visiting is quite common in Honiara folks, but this seems to occur more during weekends! Maybe  that hangover from the previous night out with your social night club gang made you missed the family planned picnic .So you decided just then to visit a friend…

3. Attended Church Services on Satuday and Sunday

Honiara is the heart of all the Christian Denomination clusttered together in one singl town. While some have their sabbath on saturday, there are also the popular sunday services thatgave sundays its holy day feeling more than saturday. Although its legal to work and operate on sundays in Honiara dwellers prefer to put aside any labourous task on sundays in order to just chill out more.( except maybe organise a picnic)

2. Spend weekends with other relatives..or you have some spending weekeds at your house.

A great way to get away from the same old people living at your home is to spend weekends with other friends or relatives and people in Honiara love spending sometime away from their own houses.  Everybody in Honiara experiences some weekend away from their own home. It is quiet refreshing to return after the weekend with a feeling of coming back and discovering home again.Or it could be that your aunty is a better cook then your mum or that your friends house stock more meat and chicken than your bare kitchen.

1.Hit the Central Market

The ultimate reason why people get up 7am on saturday in Honiara is to hit the central market for fresh local produce before it got overcrowded and foods overpriced later in the afternoon. Who in Honiara doesn’t go to the market on saturday? There is the politician and his second wife, that young teenage girl uncomfortable to be seen in the market, those roaming lius, flies and garbage of course, but everybody comes to the market on weekends to restock, just stocked, bargain, find rare delicacies, fresh vegetables, fish and fruits or just be seen as going to the markets because thats what they should have been seen as doing on a saturday weekends. It is busy and over crowded but we still like to shop there!
